The best moving carton measures between 1.5 and 2.0 cubic feet in volume. Anything larger could weigh more than 70 pounds when packed and be too heavy for your employees to handle safely during the packing stage. Beware-according to the National Safety Council, 75 percent of all workers’ compensation claims nationwide are from back injuries caused by lifting.

At Oscar’s Moving & Storage, we prefer to wrap each computer component with bubblewrap, then place the protected equipment onto a safe transport box. Other moving companies often transport electronic equipment in large open boxes, usually constructed of cardboard, which can result in water damage if it rains and crushing of the contents if the load shifts inside the truck. Regardless of which method your mover uses, do not allow them to “blanket-wrap” your computers with furniture pads. In an article in the September 1996 PC World magazine, Chuck Miller warns about harmful dust particles entering your PC and causing it to crash. Movers’ furniture pads are full of dust, dirt and fibers and therefore should never be wrapped around electronic equipment.

Here, too, is a clever invention designed to minimize downtime during an office relocation. Many moving companies, including Oscar’s Moving & Storage, can inflate Space GobblersTM into each drawer, immobilizing the loose contents inside for easy transport. Space GobblersTM eliminate the time-consuming process of unloading and packing, then unpacking and reloading drawer contents.

Not long ago, the only way to move a library was to unload and pack the books into mountains of boxes-an extremely labor-intensive method that almost always ensured mix ups and excessive downtime. These days, reputable movers like Oscar’s Moving & Storage can load your books-easily, swiftly and under your close supervision-onto rolling book bins, or book cases on wheels. This procedure also greatly reduces downtime by providing 100 percent access to your books immediately before and after the move.

For items requiring special handling, it is a good idea to check with the equipment supplier to determine what must be done to prepare the equipment for moving. This is true of copiers, network servers, manufacturing equipment, laboratory equipment, and other items like these. Since these items often require pre-move servicing, make sure arrangements are made ahead of time. Also, your OMS customer service representative may have some advice in moving some specialized items.

It is best to check with the supplier. If you have a maintenance agreement you should refer to it. If the copier is leased, your supplier may require that they relocate the machine.

Masonite sheets placed down the center of the hallway can protect the carpet, and special pads clamped in place protect the door jambs.

At Oscar’s Moving & Storage, we use the fast, safe and efficient “floating” method for loading furniture onto the trucks, as opposed to the risky “stacking” method. The floating method keeps the furniture on a dolly on the moving truck floor during transport. Movers who use the slower, labor-intensive stacking method unload the furniture from the dolly, then stack it floor to ceiling, which can result in considerable crushing damage to anything at the bottom of the pile.

Almost all office buildings require that the moving company moving your business has some type of general liability insurance. Most buildings require either $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 worth of general liability. This policy covers damage to the building, accidents, and catastrophic occurrences. General liability also protects your organization from being liable in any way during the move.

All you need to do is have your building management fax over their building requirements to OMS, and we take care of the rest. They will let us know if there needs to be masonite to protect the floors, additional padding on the elevators or banisters, where to park our trucks, and any other building policy they may have. One of the most important details of an office move is often ‘do we have exclusive use of the elevator?’ This needs to be reserved ahead of time, and is most often done by the representative of your business who is coordinating the move. To book your move, just fill out our easy and quick form quote and we’ll respond in less than 20 minutes. Or call us at (305) 270-2043 !
